The Local Community
SNIPPETS:
These photos show radically different approaches
to shelters, both in sensitive
locations in the central Lakes, with wide
cost differences.
The Grasmere design was built in the 70’s and has weathered well and still looks good, using traditional materials, it is very much in keeping with its surroundings. It doesn’t need glass/plastic windows and the total cost would be many times that of the other design. Practical and low maintenance long term.
Chapel Stile had no bus shelter/bus sign
previously so this pinpoints where the bus
stops. It is of an urban design and could
provide some shelter from Langdale rain.
Its plastic see through panels may be for safety but are unlikely to last very long without damage. All the materials are non traditional and bear no relationship to the local architecture, even the plinth is urban, when it might have had a local stone kerb.
Unlikely to appeal to overnighters, perhaps? What do residents think? DW

Advert for new Treasurer
A new Hon. Treasurer is currently being sought from early April for Langdale Village Hall. There are rarely more than 2 full meetings per year, and the accounting system is in good order.
Payments made are relatively few (annual rent, insurance, electricity bills, plus maintenance and expenses as and when required). Hiring income, for which invoices are issued, averages £200 per month and the key holder liaises over actual usage. The accounts have been done
on computer in the past, but a simple account book system would suffice. This is a voluntary activity that can be fitted in around your own life.
Contact Hon. Secretary Rosemary Park on 015394 37247.
A recent entry to our website gave the following comment:
We own a timeshare property in Elterwater and really enjoy the time we spend in Langdale. We were particularly pleased to be able to use the cycle path between Elterwater and Skelwith Bridge this February. We are keen cyclists and it was wonderful to be able to use this path instead of the road.
I know there can be lots of opposition to cyclists using what used to be a footpath but as 50 somethings we, like many other cyclists ride responsibly, always giving way to walkers. It would be wonderful if we could use the path which runs by the riverside (from Elterwater) to Chapel Stile to join with the bridleway further up. I know change is often slow but we would like to thank those who made the effort to make cycling safer from Elterwater to Skelwith Bridge.
We rarely get comments from cyclists; what do you think of this present pathway becoming a bridleway? Should any other local footpaths become bridleways? DW

The header photograph was taken by Bill Birkett who has also just launch a series of (blank cards) 'Wild Flowers of The Lake District' - there are four in the series Orange Hawkeed, Water Lily, Wild (Dog) Rose and Heath Spotted Orchid, and they were all photographed in Little Langdale during the year. They should retail (in cellophane pouch along with envelope) at around £1.50. Retail outlets so far are Langdale Co-op, Sam Reid's Bookshop in Grasmere, Fred's Bookshop and Wearing's Bookshop in Ambleside.
